In The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, by Stephen King, the main character is a young girl. Her name is Trisha McFarland and she is nine years old. She is the youngest in the family, and she has an older brother named Pete. Trisha is big fan of the Boston Red Sox, and her favorite player is relief pitcher Tom Gordon. Pete, Trisha, and their recently divorced mom all go on a hiking trail in Maine. Pete and their mom argue a lot in the beginning of the book. Pete would like to live with his father but the mom won't let him. Trisha thinks that her mom should not care and let Pete live with their dad if he wants. In the beginning Trisha takes a lot of things for granted. For example she doesn't care what her brother does she just doesn't want them to argue. Trying to get attention from her mother and brother, Trisha stops off to use the bathroom; she hopes that they will notice that she is gone and stop arguing. The bad news is....they don't. So now she is lost in the woods and doesn't know what to do.
Trisha's personality starts to change as she gets deeper and deeper into the woods. She becomes very scared and turns to her radio for support. I mentioned earlier that Trisha is a big fan of Tom Gordon, the pitcher for the Red Sox. In her backpack that she brought, she has a radio. The primary purpose for this was so she could block out the arguing of her mother and Pete. She absolutley hated listening to them argue. As she becomes more and more scared, she starts realizing just how much she misses her family, and how much she wants to be with them. Here is an excerpt that shows this,"Trisha discovered, with a miserable species of wonder, that she even missed her boogery, endlessly complaining brother." She starts to realize how much she took her family for granted, and also that she didn't appreciate them as much as she should have.
The forces that cause Trisha to change are her being out in the woods. She is forced to rely on herself, and she is not used to having to do that. in the beginning she was very dependent on her family. She always felt like she needed to have some sort of attention from them, and that is why she hated it when they argued. She also relied a lot on her father. She didn't get to see him a lot, but in the story she talks like he is very, very important to her. Although she mentioned a few times that he could be mean, she also talked about how she missed him and wanted to see him. She especially felt this way when she was lost in the woods.
